We are so incredibly excited and honored to announce that Hadi Mohammadi, Nooshin Safakhoo, and Sara Khalili‘s beautiful creation, In the Meadow of Fantasies, has received a 2022 Mildred L. Batchelder Honor!
The Mildred L. Batchelder Award was created in 1979 by the American Library Assocation to honor Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children, and a believer in the importance of good books for children in translation from all parts of the world. The award celebrates children’s literature in translation out of the belief that “children, who know they are reading in translation the same stories which children in other countries are reading, develop a sense of nearness with those in other lands.”
In a statement announcing the winners of the Batchelder, the American Library Association writes of In the Meadow of Fantasies: “In this imaginative adventure, a girl and seven horses embark on a fantastical journey. This is a lyrical parable that invites multiple readings and interpretations as the horses gather to share their visions and dreams. The poetic language and stunning illustrations effortlessly coalesce into themes of wonder and delightful discovery.” Dr. Marie A. Lejeune, the 2022 Batchelder Chair, adds that “Repeated poetic refrains and imaginative illustrations combine to create a compelling tale from the rich storytelling tradition of Iran.”
In the Meadow of Fantasies stirs reveries of Persian folklore and quietly asserts the power of generosity and sharing. The book lovingly suggests that there are endless and ever-changing ways of being in the world. This understanding of other cultures and ways of life is at the very heart of Elsewhere Editions’ mission.
